We’re at the start of a new school year, so now’s the perfect time to look at tasty and healthy options to put in your children’s school lunchboxes.
You want to give your children delicious and healthy food, and ensure you comply with their school’s healthy lunchbox policies, so we’ve put together a handy list of ideas to keep those tastebuds tickled all term.
Add some crunch – We love adding crunchy vegetables to wraps, packing them with vitamins and minerals to help children grow and learn. Batons of carrot and cucumber are ideal for this, but you could also add sweetcorn, beetroot, and microgreens like cress in your school lunchboxes.
Pack some pasta – Most children like pasta dishes, so make them some protein packed pasta salads with eggs, ham, or cheese. Add tomatoes, sweetcorn, peas, or rounds of cucumber to keep up the veg count.
Transform some classic comfort food – Most children love fish fingers, so make some fish finger hot dogs with soft rolls and homemade fish fingers. Add a dash of their favourite sauce or ketchup to make it even more comforting. Make homemade mini pizzas with fresh tomato sauce, a light base, diced courgette and peppers, and grated cheddar cheese.
Make easy protein rolls for their school lunchboxes – Omelette rolls are an excellent way to ensure your child gets enough protein to get them through until dinner time. Keep them in shape with skewers and add chopped peppers, tomatoes, and cheese.
Skewer some fruit – A little sweetness goes a long way in a school lunchbox. Make some fruit skewers with segments of clementine, strawberries, melon, pineapple, kiwis, cherries, and blueberries.
Bake some savoury muffins – Make cheese, sweetcorn, and onion muffins or add courgettes and broccoli to make a muffin packed full of greens. Delicious!
Fry up some veggie fritters – Making chickpea fritters is a clever way of adding both protein and vegetables to your child’s lunchbox. Add shredded courgettes and feta cheese to the fritter mix along with your cooked chickpeas and seasoning, then blitz together and fry until crispy. You’re happy they’re eating something good for them, they love the taste. Pair them with sliced tomatoes.
Here’s to a delicious new term!
