Testimonials
The restaurant is exactly what I want in a county restaurant. It fits perfectly with its surroundings.
Now as for the food and service they were both excellent. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. I mentioned to Kate that it’s first time in all long time that I could have happily ordered anything off the menu as everything appealed to me.
Everyone on the table really enjoyed ever mouthful! My mother in law said more than once: “I don’t want this to end."
So, thank you very much - we shall see you again soon.

Second visit to 1861 and once again it was a wonderful experience. The food was absolutely delicious - between us we tried hake, scallop risotto, stuffed courgette flowers for starters and goat, trio of venison and sea bream for mains. All of which were perfect. The sharing platter of puddings topped off a wonderful occasion. Can't understand why the journalists haven't found it yet! We will be back again.

Despite living locally I have visited here for the first time this weekend. I also asked for a vegan option at the last minute and was so accommodated, it was unbelievable.
We turned up ridiculously early but were made to feel so welcome and it really set the tone for a great evening…I had artichokes to start, and I have to say it was superb. Light, yet rich with an amazing balance of flavours and textures. Being vegan is normally about just making up the numbers. I certainly didn't feel that. It was delicious, satisfying and my partner tried mine and we both thoroughly enjoyed it... We had mains of venison for my partner with seasonal veg which looked cooked to perfection, and I was assured it was…I had the wild mushroom fricassee. Just superb. Mopped up the little sauce left over with the homemade bread I had left. We will definitely return.

Outstanding service, pleasant eloquent lady, wonderful manner and outstanding food. Best food ever. The food was delicious and worth the money.
We went again today 31 March 24 for Easter...the food was good, and I ate too much. Wine was superb.
Company was delicious and Kate and Simon were wonderful hosts.
Vegetarian options: Outstanding options, tell them when booking.
Dietary restrictions: Vegan, vegetarian, meat catering. Just tell them of your needs and they will try and meet them. Well worth every penny.

I cannot express how much I appreciate the genuine kindness and good humour at the 1861. We went there today for lunch and the food was amazing, beyond that nothing was too much trouble for Kate and Simon. You will be hard pushed to find a friendlier more welcoming restaurant, where nothing is too much trouble. It is the little thoughtful touches that can make all the difference and when they just happen without asking, or even realising that you needed them – you know you are in good hands. A perfect meal, in a perfect setting – what is not to love?

A must for any foodie with an amazing gourmet cuisine experience...
We had ordered the taster menu of five courses for dinner and it was spectacular!
To start essence of tomato jelly, a clear jelly with cubed tomatoes, very different and unique.
Secondly we were presented with artichoke salad...it was perfectly light and delicious.
Third course the fish, a crusted salmon served on a potato gratin and spinach base. Ethically source salmon from was tender and melted in the mouth, for me I'm not a fish fan, in fact I would not normally eat fish, but this may have changed all that and my partner still talking about this dish.
The fourth course was a duo of wild boar, served with a mash and seasonal selected vegetables with jus. This was sensational for me, beautifully presented, and I demolished the whole plate. I was actually tempted to ask for seconds.
Finished with a panna cotta, poached rhubarb with rhubarb ice cream...The quality of food was superb, we were looked after throughout and would return in a heartbeat. Thanks to Simon and Kate for an amazing evening, we will be back.

Our favourite restaurant and the meal was amazing.
Pickled pear Stilton and walnut salad to start, which was excellent.
A trio of game for main and perfect cheeseboard to follow
The glass of champagne as an aperitif was perfect followed by a reasonable half bottle of Rioja - very good with the game - and a brandy and coffee served in the lounge of the accommodation which was very romantic.
Service and food is 10/10

We have to say from start to finish everything was perfect. The food was amazing, every mouthful was full of flavour and the portions were just right! The passion fruit soufflé was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. Kate was absolutely lovely and even gave us some really good places to visit with my 2-year-old nephew!! Can’t recommend enough and can’t wait to go back when we visit again!
